Tools of the trade…What you really need is not this…. Review of my favorite stores latest add

Sew Beautiful
scissors

Do I really need all these?

I look at this and think yummy. But wait a minute I already learned that lesson. Use what you have like the Mimi taught ya. And what about all the folks here around me trying to make a living? Now this on-line store IS my hands down favorite and if I order I do it from them. But I wait for the big sales. There are some free shipping deals here but only a couple may be worth you time as a beginner or intermediate sewing enthusiast.
Scroll to the bottom of the page to see the add. I tried to remove all the jib-jab.
If …I ordered what their expert is saying… I would have spent all this :
Tools:$147.48
Other stuff:$ 501
That is $ 648.48!!! with free shipping woooo hooo!
I  wish I had had some reviews when I started this deal years ago. I’m such a sucker when you talk about “professional looking” finished products. Lets face it here, a professional couture seamstress are on SALARY (like gets paid not by the piece) and this stuff is provided.  Not the AVERAGE sewer now is she…took me a while to figure THAT out.
Holy mollie folks.
I tried this pen. It does not last long, especially compared to the basting glue for the PRICE. Spent 6.25
Seam tape is also cheap and snipped into tiny squares I have used it on a wedding dress with 50 yards of silk ribbon to be placed before there was basting glue.
The small scissors I got on sale at a local store 5.25
The big scissors ARE a good buy for the quality but I use the small pair so “no go”
The scallop templet? really? I use a piece of card board and draw it out with a pencil and a string and then cut different ones or they come free in sewing magizines.  To make it nice ,I use a piece of scrap paper that I “misprinted” from my printer. Glue it on and write the information on it. Cost about an hour for 6 of them in different ones.
Press and shape board. A definite need for heriloom and lace work. But I got mine on sale at local store for 13.99 (not on sale). Cutting board on one side. soft pad on the other. Us it for a gazilion things.
To lace shape. Trace the loop design on the board on misprinted paper like the design like on the board. Do a web search for the pattern. Stab pin it to my cheap board and viola…saved 28 Bucks and have all sorts of other designs and options.
Uhmmm yeah, another tube turner. not for me.
Construction books, like if you have more than 5…check your magazines or the web. It’s a money grabber.
Fabric? Holey cow. She who dies with the most stash wins comes to mind. I got about 12K of stuff I haven’t used yet. Do love the MP cotton but still haven’t used the 4  pieces of 2 yards from 2 years ago. (hint order on 50% of days or the free shipping days. You CAN count on MP for quality, fast delivery. She is the ONLY one I trust for online orders)
Pleated fabric, good deal.
After pleater, spool holder, thread  and time learning how to use the thing. I figured I’d wasted about $250. Go for the $10, or contact your local stores. There are local folks that need the cash and will do it for you on fabric you have for the same price.
Digital embroidery. So wish I had the funds to do that. I looked at several over the last year. Ends up being like buying a B.O.A.T. (Bale out another thousand) or buying a car. Machine-check, programs-check, needles-check, more thread-check, classes-check….
I have 3 local ladies that bid for my work. They need the cash and I DON”T need to spend all that cash and loose my mind on yet another project. I KNOW I have never met a craft I didn’t like but scattered is scattered.
Those grip scissor are on my wish list for another century. At last count I have 5 pares of large, 4 pairs of small, 3 seam rippers, 3 exacto knife thingys with different shapes and 2 different electric shears. I use the same 3 daily. The electric shears worked for about 1 year. Now I can’t get blades anymore.
Still looking for a decent pair. I learned how to use the rotary cutters (3 different kinds..I told you I have tried a LOT of things). I plan my cuts better and use things more efficiently using those and it is faster than the electric shears.
I love this store, the lady has always been about helping and supporting sewers in the industry rather than herself. In return Karma blessed her. I have actually written her about some of the stuff they are saying you NEED. Also about her recent sell out to another company (my opinion) as I am getting stuff from another company I did not order nor ask for.
No response and that is okay. I realize her job now is to push these nice ladies ideas as is her style, but please young sewers, don’t spend your hard earned cash on some of this stuff.  Sewing is an amazing thing and getting discouraged is easy. Email me if you have questions about what you REALLY need. It is more about techniques not TOOLS.

Ready set go, how I do it at warp speed with the Gaelig

It’s 6 am ….and it has been one weird ol’ week. What with the stalkers and accidents…  and the cat whose eyes swelled shut and the other that hurt her leg AGAIN.

Luna pre car chasing phase

Hubby got a new job and Daughter is on her way with the grand babies so the next 7-10 days is going to be a wild ride! I have got to MOVE!

Here’s the music I listen to, while I’m going warp speed…

These are also connected to my Facebook sight.

Warning, don’t click if you are trying to relax!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdO-JqtDPTw&feature=related

I call it the Bonnet song

I don’t have time to be discouraged or overwhelmed! I just turn on that Julie Fowlis and GO! Can’t sit still listening to THAT can you?

Here is a place to just keep listening:

http://www.myspace.com/juliefowlis

Now which direction do I need to go while I’m dancing about?

I need to baby proof the house, clean the carpets, muck the Rose garden, Stock the pantry, Fight back the ironing sprawl, bath the cats, change the sheets and was all the slip covers…. YEAH, RIGHT! HAHAHAHAHAH.

Note to self, Glass breaks,,,remove it.

I have found an actual FLAW in the Lady Iris Jean way of doing things this week. Grandbabies are new to this house and as I started the pr-cleaning prep … I had flash backs of Daughter at age 1 at Lady Iris Jean’s house. She was a holy terror. Thankfully she wasn’t a climber. My only hope is that this one isn’t either. THE Mimi was a stickler for cleanliness and order just like I am BUT, ..Daughter lives with 3 dogs and a Marine and a one year old. I mean so really…how clean do I need to go here?

Note to self remove the antique lamp and table.. Maybe I should just have them sleep in the garage? No, the cats sleep in there and they would be upset. I’ll figure it out somehow.

There will be crumbs, juice, spit, drool, spills and the occasional bodily fluid all over the place by the end of the 1st day. Put a woooooow on that there clean machine honey! Whites…thank god for bleach huh’ Mom?

At least I have a home carpet cleaner and you didn’t!

We have a saying in our family: “Is it clean or is it Mimi clean?”

Uhmmm, I think we are going to just have a plain clean.

Hubby and I have people over every Sunday and he got really exasperated this last week. He said ,” These people aren’t your mother and they won’t notice that dirty place on the sugar container just turn it over. Besides, she probably wouldn’t have noticed it either.”

Lay Iris Jean

Me: “ Yeah, you are probably right about the group and No mom wouldn’t say anything, we’d just find her in here cleaning it and she’d say “I’m just helping you, this looks like it’s hard to clean and I don’t mind, where do you keep your bleach?”.

Umm, yeah. Not going to happen this week I’m afraid.

So the list just got smaller. I figure the spring-cleaning will commence the day they LEAVE.  Baby and Daughter have been cooped up in a cold wet house for months and while it is wet here, at least it’s 70-80 everyday. We can all go play in the yard. Mark off another chore AND add baby proof the yard.

So that leaves (no pun intended), …a do – able list of fill the pantry, and baby proofing the universe as I know it…Yeah, maybe I can sew on… like Friday!

I found an old 1920-1930 baby romper pattern and whipped up 3 real fast. Heirlooming them, takes goobs and gobbs of time. I used lots of Swiss embroidery and insertion and oodles of lace. (Like about 5 yards of this amazing French edging (just on one little hiney! and 1-2 yards of the other stuff) I still have 1 to top stitch and 2 leg elastic weaving’s to do but I’m really pleased. What do ya think?

Ill be listening to this one for the hand work:

(The spinning songs)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-ofqNfH9No&feature=related

3 little bubble outfits from 1920-30's pattern

Here are the pics I tried to upload the other day when I thought I would have a coronary from this darn blog. Enjoy.

1920-30s pattern and fabric with frothy frothy lace

5 yards of French lace on a baby's bottom, PRICELESS!

Oh… and Dear Lubbock Auntie the one with the Lacey shoulders I made with you in mind. Kisses!

Lace, embroidery and ruffles with polkadots!

Swiss embroidery, swiss lace and roses, so lovely!

This week I’m sure I’ll be singing this one A LOT ( about a complaining daughter) I PLAN to teach the LICKY-NAY song to the Grand babies!

Eye candy update

Check out the Fb page for a preview of things at the studio.

Heirloom lace skirt- for Missy S.

When I die, I say just pile all that lace on top and leave me naked.
Remember the saying “She who dies with the biggest stach wins.”…???

Yeah, It’s like that.

Anyway

Grand-baby coming in a couple of weeks and this place is not baby proofed. Gotta get busy wrapping some things up and fast! I spent 2 hours removing antiques from the guest room this morning (things that little hands can demolish). Jeff is going through and rehanging things with SCREWS…he envisions her to be a spider monkey capable of scaling walls with suction-cup like fingers. Ha!

Have a great day and enjoy the eye candy!

I’m Calling Momma!

Creating something with a life of it’s own.
It is not a new concept.
Women do it all the time.
We learn from our Mom’s, long after they are gone EXACTLY what that is like and that it does NOT take 9 months…it takes a lifetime!

The parallels with giving birth and creating are just too cliche. But honestly, I’m at the point in the gestation that I am writing in my SLEEP. Anyone remember being 9 months pregnant, unable to breath, or get comfortable. Then dozing off to sleep only to come awake as they decide to wake up and play and are jumping up and down on your bladder?

The Lil' Lady Iris Jeans' eyes

Yeah it’s like that.I awaken mid-sentence composing.

So I took one look at it all this morning and decided I needed to LAUGH about it all for a while.

Somehow I found myself on the AARP site.
I found a list of things to do and NOT do, after age 50.

What a hoot. My husband starting getting membership forms at age 50. He breathlessly waits 2 weeks from now, when he can get the Seniors deal at i-Hop (now age 55 to qualify).

I have not laughed THAT hard in months.

I mean really…it never dawned on me that,…
there is an age limit for using the word “tinkle”!
Bahahahahah!

Here’s the link to one of them. Of course I can’t figure out how to get there directly! This adventure of electronic devises is the point of this blog remember?

http://www.aarp.org/entertainment/books/info-03-2011/slang-we-should-drop.1.html

But, going on, One list had this one in it:

“try to master something you are afraid of but won’t kill you”

I think they were talking about skydiving or something.

So I started thinking about what I haven’t done. Self, always full of fascinating help says, ” … Uhmmm … finish the BOOK!”

No-no-no self,…..What other stuff did I think I couldn’t do. Stuff that was too terrifying to even comprehend. I think that things, placed in perspective against another experience helps me compare how bad it really might be(my brain always says “it’s the end of the world”.) There are a million things on my list of things I have survived now BUT…. this one train of thought was interesting and they always involved my mother:

Little terror at 6 months with Paw

Giving birth terrified me, but didn’t kill me.1 hour after finding the little pink X in September,I called Mom
“On a scale of 1-10, how bad is this going to hurt?”
What?
Giving birth?
Honey, when are you due?
July, 9 months.
Good god child! WHAT DAY ARE YOU IN!

Marrying my soul mate terrified me;
Mom I’m terrified, I can’t marry him.
Why?
Because it will be wonderful and then he will die and it will hurt too bad.
Really? I would ask you what day you are in but for grins I’ll just start with what decade?

Now you can see WHY I only plan until Friday, huh?

This is going to kill me...but 1st... I will cherish it

Anyway…..

Raising a TEEN AGE GIRL terrified me but didn’t kill me.

I just thought I WAS dying. It frequently crossed my mind that, one of us was going to have to GO …..Ever utter these words or, had them uttered to you:

“I brought you into this world, and I can take you out!”

Uhmmmm, yeah. Heard ‘um and said ‘um.

Her therapist (1995) said, “that probably wasn’t helping the situation.” But let’s face it, very little will HELP a nutso teenager other than continued physical presence in their life and constant communication. At least we were speaking.

I remember thinking. “Well it’s helping ME to NOT kill her. As long as she is sucking air there is still hope. Then,…Note to self: Call your mother to thank her for not ending your life… And apologize profusely for all harm caused by raging hormones, along with every hair-brained thing I ever did.” I made that call so many times. Sometimes I would call to tell her the curse of “10 just like you” wrapped up in one little body, was NOT funny anymore and could she PLEASE take it BACK?!

Lady Jean goofing (can I say that?)

Mom is cackling with all her heart at all the stories she left to be told!
“But MOMMA!, writing the Lil Lady Iris Jean Books and projects is…terrifying and it might kill me!

Mom, self is BOTHERING ME!

Example of nasty negative absolutes SELF chants at times:
This will NEVER work
this ALWAYS happens,
this is just RUINED and should be burned, or
EVERYBODY thinks your crazy and NOBODY is going to look at this much less read it

I decided I NEEDED to know more about writing so I (of COURSE), got another book. Said book states

“don’t proof read, do not even get tempted to do so, don’t do it…. just GO and keep going.”

I now have 6 folders to proofread. Now I need to make room in the schedule to proofread? Geeze, Louis!

I laughed and I got real still this morning and…

Mom says,
“It will all turn out as it should be. Always has, always will…”.

Even when I think in nasty negative absolutes, she’s always right… always was.

And lets face it. I never could tell a “good” situation” from a “bad one”.

Ya see this?

My child scaring me to death AGAIN

She turned out so beautiful, joined the few female patrolling Marines.
(I thought I would die, again)
and now has a daughter of her own and another on the way.
(These babies are the REASON for Lil’ Lady Iris Jean ).

My 2 greatest fears. So what do I know?

She is strong. Oh so strong of character, she glows from those eyes so like my mothers. She is creative, loving and still learning herself. Simply an amazing women.

And.. THE best part is…

She calls to apologize, FREQUENTLY.
And he isn’t dead YET!

Staring at Lace, conversing with my….. self?

Staring at Lace…I get the design board up to the lace part, and then I just STARE at it.

I have an enormous collection. It started when I wanted to get married in a gown covered in bits and pieces of scraps of lace in 2001. I found one…
It was $3000. I gagged, but was able to stop what followed only because I was wearing it. We went with a more flat style with scraps of lace on handkerchiefs with the date embroidered on them and an awesome Red velvet cape.

Red cape sans lace

But I started collecting scraps and bits, at close outs and at garage sales.
I had a daughter who was going to be of marrying age in a few years, like if, THAT ever happened….

She married at 2 am in Las Vegas in a pin-up girl style and dress in 2009 …BLAST, it was not (I’m too old for that caarap)…Sing with me now,… “I did it mmmyyyyyy wwwaaayyyyy”.

2 much at 2 am

So I HAVE all this LACE. I feel like I’m married to it somehow. I mean…what if it’s the wrong decision, what if I have to take it off, that’s a booger to do. But I get it in placed, and I’ll be attaching it on a sleeve after FINALLY deciding “this tea dyed french 2 inch would look incredible on a frothy soft blue top.”

I sit and pause as the machine starts to whine and I stop mid-stitch and think,
“Oh good grief, you aren’t marrying it for GODs sakes”….see what I mean.

One batch of lace layed out, I have way more...

Then comes…
“Well that’s just too plain, maybe we should improve on the plan”.

Take COVER.

This is a red flag. This is NOT a good thing.
Improving on the plan usually gets me a flustered raving pouting mess…

I like these but...

I like these but...

And I just used these on this skirt

So I keep going. Thank goodness it’s time for a break.

Tea time with SELF

I almost messed with the plan.Thank the powers that be,… it ended before it started. It would inevitably ended up with me staring at the lace again (all 4000 or so yards of the stuff) and getting nothing done.

I say…,” Hay self, why do you do that?
Self says,”Is it because it’s pretty?”
“Na, that’s not it, I mean it is pretty and all but that’s not it.”
“Well, what the hell is it self?”
“Waste?”
“Maybe you are superstitious, and think if you use it …I don’t know something will happen?”

“Na, it’s like eye candy,it makes me smile to look at it…I just love it!”

“Na, that’s stupid. You are just a 2 year old who doesn’t want to share.”

“Yeah, THAT could be it… You never did like to share either.”

Yeah I have columns!

It’s a slow trudge for happy destiny but persistence seems to pay off.

The computer:
I found the little page for columns.Still no categories at the top and the help desk can’t figure it out either. This is NORMAL for my computer problems. Remember Apple? Yeah, they can’t figure out why my printer won’t connect using an airport…nor how I keep ending up registered with 3 accounts with them…nor…. you get the picture.

Facebook notice to authorize is still right there and I give up for now as to figuring out just WHY…

I think I must have a prayer for patience stuck in God’s cache from years ago…. Geeze but I wish it would clear soon.

What’s up for the week?

Sewing:
My little world
Cleaning the studio after the set of projects just completed. I keep it so nice and neat and pretty until picture and posting days and then I just explode in there! Today I also need to wash some lovely lavender and white linen.

I have a push from the great beyond to do a linen Baby romper and a Madria edged sun dress out of this stuff. It’s just so…yummy is all I can say.

I have some really cool prints and they are so in style right now for the kids but my head keeps thinking about these lovely things so…

Winding bobbins, redoing the project boards I keep in front of me (to decrease my tendencies to go 10 different directions ya see), then some drawing and maybe some more pictures of some adult “Faire” dresses from the old store. Well when things go well anyway. I get tangled up in more ways than one some days as you can see…

Multi tasking doesn't work for me

The book:
I have been writing more regularly. I’m really please with how the characters are coming so alive with personalities sketched by words. This is most fascinating to observe. I know there are lots of software out there to help develop them but they just seem to be developing themselves.

I have an idea why, and it makes me giggle and want to write some more!
This IS about having fun now isn’t it!

I sketched some stuff while watching TV last night as you can see. Just some penciled ideas for the books. I have tended to put this one off in the last week. I can really get into the Zen of creating when I am drawing and the world goes away. I guess, the rest of my life is getting in the way! I have SO MUCH LIFE now, and not enough time to get into that meditative state. I know I can’t force any of. If it becomes an assigned task…I’ll loose the fun. So I think I’ll just be ware of it and see what happens.

Just doodling and trying to figure out how to put Lil’Iris in the snow head first…It’ll come…eventually

My closest spiritual adviser informs me that, as I probably will not become a millionaire by Friday, that,.. it is a good idea to just have fun until Friday and if I do become one by Friday…we can discuss that then.

i.e.: I need to stay in the moment to be productive, to have fun and to create in HP’s world…not My imaginary one:)

The Painting & the dolls:

Percephonee is still with us, she lives on the wall now.

I think I have decided to go with painting the eyes on the dolls. It is faster and I am better at it than delicate embroidery.

I tend to paint a lot in the spring when the weather here is in the 70’s. Most of the U.S. is still in Winter. Not here. From now until the 1st week in May it will be 70s-80s and the studio is lit by the sun that rises and sets totally on the south side of the house. It illuminates the area and colors are vivid.

I’ll also be working on the hair…(another doll part to add to the other doll parts laying every where in this house). I have several of Lady Iris Jeans little dolls and it is neat to see the expression of her in personality in the collection.

Well see you guys on Fb I hope, if I ever figure this thing out!
have a great creating week!…’til Friday.

Like a small animal on linoleum but at least I’m moving!

I have been extremely busy, sort of like a cat on linoleum. I do get places, there is a whole lot of movement and activity going on I just haven’t posted anything so you can’t see it!

1st off the Book:
I have the forward completed and 3 completed chapters and 3 more in the works and about 40 chapters planned and titled. The ideas for the entire project are so very exciting I really wish this was the year 3000 or, I was Samantha Stevens (I used to wish that a lot when I was little).

Life is just too cool and there are just so many experiences! I also wish I had a whole lot of money to hire out the proofing, illustration and copy … but holy mother of FiFi, I was born under the poverty line and stretch daily to keep just above it. But oh well, more to experience right?
I am having fun fun fun! And ooohh so pleased with my Battenburg finished creation, even without the sash, that I can’t wait to out it up Friday!

Sandra Sue and the Battenburg lace confection

The Illustrations are too cool and I have acquired some computer apps which I thought would might make that part easier…hmmmm. yea. NOT!
Let’s face it guys, I’m just not computer literate and I can’t get the training wheels off that bike. It is exhausting and wastes so much time I could be writing, drawing, painting or sewing.

I was able to settle on a certain style for the eyes of the characters. Which just thrills me to death. Iris Jean had these eyes that were so cool in real life. My daughter has those eyes only magnified x10. I have been drawing those eyes a thousand different ways for 3 weeks! There are “EYEs everywhere in the house! The kitchen, dinning room, studios and even one bathroom! I’ve found the perfect perfect pair and they fit on each project so perfectly!

Which leads me to the dolls, Paper dolls, and kids projects.

The dolls!
OMG! That has been so much fun. As you know, I hand draft pretty much everything. Give me a picture of something and I WILL figure it out and come up with a pattern.

Now this is a secret, some folks think I’m a Genius but I am NOT… there is a reason I HAVE to do it that way……. I CAN NOT follow directions to save my life! BAHAHAHAHAH! Me and a friend laughed until we cried the other day. Here is a really good example!

I made 3 dolls. 1 yr old Baby Iris Jean and 3-5 year old Sandra Sue. I had a Doll pattern that I just loved the look of and thought I would give it a whirl and see which turned out better.

Well the 1st 2 went off without a hitch and got all but the faces/hair completed in about 2 days…all the while I was also messing with said pattern doll.

This pattern doll got her legs put on as follows:
1- Inside out correct placement of toes, so I tore that out and then….
2- Toes pointing backwards correct placement so I tore that out then….
3- Toes pointing next to her bottom backwards!

I gave up and will have to hand sew them on today. I will TRY…but every time I pick her up I can’t stop laughing at the REAL me that no one knows about! (ya know…I think I’ll name her Fifi!)

The Dresses:
Got 3 finished they will go up on Friday in the store. I am really really pleased with the style, fabrics and lace combinations not to mention the dreamy heirloom blue ribbons on the last one.

A major draw back to hand drafting and marking on fabric is every now and then the markers leave residual that will not come out. I have tried several different pen’s, pencils and chalks through the years and the most recommended water marker is what I draft with these days. The little apron sundress was going to be woven with ribbon trims but I found the draft mark had not come out! …

Drafting marks

I could get it out but it would take an entire day and I want to move on so I will sell this one at a discount as a “heirloom blank” with some ribbon and someone else can weave ribbon and decorate it.

The Labels got designed and printed and did not bleed during washing so YEAH! We have got a legit label going on them today.

I just hate uploading pictures (of course I do…it’s on a computer),
but I did get them done.

Mock up Baby Iris Jean

The Doll mock-ups have become my little models and are so cute! Not having my little granddaughter around is hard so I just picked the 1yr old up the other day, and gave a good “Squnch”!
